Stories Of The Docks Volunteer

Exciting opportunity to become a volunteer on the Stories of the Docks project!

Background to the Stories of the Docks Project

The Stories of the Docks  is a new project to capture and celebrate the stories of the people who worked on the Port of Grimsby, in particular those who worked in the buildings which now form the Kasbah Conservation Area. These are the stories of those who worked in or visited the buildings here, including the banks, post office, clog makers, shops, trawler-makers & boat builders, cafés, sail lofts, fabricators, fish merchants and so on, rather than the already well-known stories of trawlermen and those who worked out at sea.

Main aims/volunteer role

The main output for this project is a digital scrapbook, this will be produced collaboratively by participants in the project and will include photographs, memories including oral histories, archive documents and creative works inspired by the memories that are shared.  These memories will be collected and stored locally for future generations to be able to hear the incredible stories of Grimsby docks. We are looking for volunteers to help us collect and share these memories starting in August 2024. We are recruiting for volunteers from 22nd July and volunteers will need to be available for up to 10 memory sharing workshops taking place between August and November.

Why volunteer with us?

As a volunteer on the Stories of the Docks project, you will be provided with oral history training to support in the collection of memories. This training will focus on preparing for interviews, how to use recording equipment, editing audio and storage of audio with consent. Furthermore, volunteering on the project will give volunteers the opportunity to develop new skills, learn more about their local history and heritage and connect with the wider community.
