Lincolnshire Folk Tales

The Curious Lore of Lincolnshire

From the Black Shuck and Nanny Rutt, to the witches and ghosts that haunt the fenlands, Lincolnshire is rich with lost folk lore.

As part of the Lincolnshire Folk Tales Project (2024-25) we had the exciting opportunity to delve into the intriguing realm of local folktales through a series of enriching events that took place across the length and breadth of the county...

Myth Makers (afternoon workshop)

We began the day with an afternoon of making myths and spinning new stories, immersing ourselves in imaginative world of the storyteller. These workshops were designed for all ages and allowed attendees to unleash their inner creativity.

Lincolnshire Lore (evening performance)

Followed by an enchanting evening filled with captivating stories by Time Will Tell Theatre and delightful folk music by Mossy Christian.

About the project:

The Lincolnshire Folk Tales project (2024-25), funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and hosted by the School of Arts and Humanities at Nottingham Trent University, explores the origins, legacies, connections and futures of Lincolnshire folk tales.

The aim is to encourage wider engagement with this heritage from writers, the general public, and scholars. The project will include an exciting range of books, events, and workshops, as well as an interactive website with a folk tale locations map and a public forum.

The project is led by Rory Waterman and research fellow Anna Milon, who look forward to hearing from you:  this project is intended to be yours, and is open to literally everyone, especially if you have a connection to Lincolnshire. Please visit www.lincolnshirefolktalesproject.com, have a look around, and get in touch!
