HOD 2024 – St. Nicolas and Captain Bligh of the Bounty.

September 7 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Part of the Lincolnshire HODs Festival 2024

The Grade 1 listed mediaeval church of St. Nicolas has acted for centuries as a fixed point for travellers, en route by land or sea around the Humber, and a waypoint benchmark can still be seen on the West Tower. There is also a surprising connection to a very famous ship’s Captain, Bligh of the Bounty. Captain Bligh carried out a navigational survey of the Humber in 1797, using St. Nicolas’ church as one of many reference points, on both banks of the river, that helped to guide mariners along the meandering route of this major estuary.

If we open the tower access will be limited to the ringing room and bell chamber, we will not be going on to the tower roof. Access is via a stone spiral staircase so participants should be in good physical health.
