Part of the Lincolnshire HODs Festival 2024

Before 1830, travel between Lincolnshire and Norfolk was hampered by the tidal wash between the counties. A bridge in 1830 and causeway in 1831, opened the bottleneck, shortened the road route by a day’s travel, and increased road traffic many fold. 30 years later the railway followed the same route and the gateway to East Anglia was well and truly flung open.
This exhibition will show what local life was like before 1830; how it changed in the decades following, focusing on the 3 bridges at Sutton Bridge, land reclamation, the coming of the railway, the port and the local impact of motor transport.
