HOD – Anthony Salvin’s Grantham – St John the Evangelist, Spitalgate

Visit Anthony Salvin’s church of St John the Evangelist and decide for yourself whether its early critics of the tower and its pinnacles were fair or just jealous. Built in 1840-41 when Salvin was working on nearby Harlaxton Manor and had just completed the Grantham Savings Bank in Finkin Street, the church was expanded in the 1883-84 to meet the growing population of the suburb many of whom worked for Richard Hornsby & sons, at the adjacent Spitalgate Ironworks.
