HODs – The South Common, a Walk Through 2000 Years of Lincoln’s History.

15 September 2022 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Part of the Lincolnshire HODs Festival 2022

This substantial walk covers the historical shaping of the present South Common. Crossed by Roman Ermine Street with its roadside cemetery, the area became a very large medieval common, shared by local communities, extensively quarried, and a source of water for the Malandry Hospital and the Priory of St. Catherine. In the 19th century came controversial changes – a main road, a railway, landscaping for leisure activities and housing developments and its purpose as a common for animal pasture was threatened. The walk will also take in the Cowpaddle, original site for the Lincolnshire Agricultural Show, and its 19th century cemeteries.

Bring a picnic and hope for good weather.
