Katherine Howard and Kateryn Parr, the Teenager and the Widow
Cousin of Anne Boleyn, Katherine Howard was less than half the king’s age when she caught the king’s eye while serving Anna of Cleves. Before coming to court, Katherine had some sort of relationship with Henry Mannox and Francis Dereham. She was completely unprepared for what would happen when Henry fell made her his queen. Katherine became embroiled in a relationship with Thomas Culpepper, something that came to light and resulted her being condemned to death by an Act of Attainder. Like her cousin, Katherine was executed at the Tower on 13 February in 1542.
Although some thought Henry might be finished with the marriage game, he fell for the twice-widowed Kateryn Parr. She was an intelligent, elegant, and religious woman. It’s thought Kateryn was in love with Thomas Seymour when she married the king, but she worked to make her marriage successful. Kateryn encouraged the king to bring his daughters to court and took an active interest in her stepchildren. She encouraged religious reform, something that nearly caused serious trouble with the king. And she gained the king’s trust to the point he made her Regent in his absence.
