‘The Victorian Christmas’
Join us at The Old King’s Head to learn all about The Victorian Christmas. You will discover a brief history of Christmas in England, the early traditions and how we lost them.
Each person will be able to try a range of homemade Victorian samples including:
Temperance Beverage ( dates to 1872) (non-Alcoholic) Traditionally a summer drink, made with Raspberries and pineapple, nowadays we can make this at any time of the year with frozen raspberries.
Hot Spiced apple juice (1900’s New England Recipe)
Mrs Beeton’s Cheese Straws (1882)
Devilled Almonds (1890)
Victorian gingerbread
Christmas pudding and sweet pudding sauce – Charles Elme Francatelli (in 1840 he was Maitre d’hotel and Chief cook to Queen Victoria)this is a recipe from his book: A Plain Cookery Book for the Working Classes (1852) served warm.
Take home recipes will be provided for you all to give it a go in your own time!
