SUMMARY:Katherine Howard and Kateryn Parr\, the Teenager and the Widow
DESCRIPTION:The Six Wives of Henry VIII: Personality and Politics \nJoin us\, online\, as we welcome back Carol Ann Lloyd with another new series of talks. \n Katherine Howard and Kateryn Parr\, the Teenager and the Widow \nCousin of Anne Boleyn\, Katherine Howard was less than half the king’s age when she caught the king’s eye while serving Anna of Cleves. Before coming to court\, Katherine had some sort of relationship with Henry Mannox and Francis Dereham. She was completely unprepared for what would happen when Henry fell made her his queen. Katherine became embroiled in a relationship with Thomas Culpepper\, something that came to light and resulted her being condemned to death by an Act of Attainder. Like her cousin\, Katherine was executed at the Tower on 13 February in 1542. \nAlthough some thought Henry might be finished with the marriage game\, he fell for the twice-widowed Kateryn Parr. She was an intelligent\, elegant\, and religious woman. It’s thought Kateryn was in love with Thomas Seymour when she married the king\, but she worked to make her marriage successful. Kateryn encouraged the king to bring his daughters to court and took an active interest in her stepchildren. She encouraged religious reform\, something that nearly caused serious trouble with the king. And she gained the king’s trust to the point he made her Regent in his absence. \nTickets: Members £8 / Non-members £10 \nTickets can be bought from our shop and if this isn’t the first time you’ve paid more why don’t you become a member and start saving?

SUMMARY:The Templar heresy trials
DESCRIPTION:The Templar Talks  \nJoin us\, at our newly renovated Old King’s Head in Kirton\, as we welcome back Dr Nic Morton for the last talk in his latest series. \nTalk 4: The Templar heresy trials \nOn 18 March 1314 the Templar master James of Molay was burned at the stake on the orders of King Philip IV of France.  This event marked the dramatic culmination of a trial that had lasted almost seven years.  In the eyes of their critics the Templars were a heretical order fully deserving of dissolution.  In the eyes of their defenders\, the Templars were unjustly accused.  Either way\, the events of the Templar Trial would echo down the centuries provoking strong reactions even today.  These events pose many difficult questions for historians but perhaps the most debated is also the most obvious – were the Templars actually heretics?  This talk explores the history of the Templar trial\, examining the motives and interests of the leading protagonists and seeking to understand why the trial ended with the formal dissolution of the Templar Order. \nTickets are £8 member / £10 non-member and can be bought from our online shop. Why don’t you become a member and save money! \nA combination ticket for all talks in the series is available. \nAlthough this is the only talk (in this series) that is in-person\, we do plan to record it for those who are unable to attend. Customer feedback from his previous talks suggested an in-person talk would be popular\, a chance to meet Dr Nic Morton and an opportunity to get books signed by the author.

SUMMARY:The Templars in the British Isles and Western Europe
DESCRIPTION:The Templar Talks  \nJoin us\, online\, as we welcome back Dr Nic Morton with his new series of talks. \nTalk 3: The Templars in the British Isles and Western Europe \nThe Knights Templar had a major presence in Lincolnshire\, just as they did across many parts of Christendom\, but what were these lands for?  The Templars are best known for their wars in the Near East so why did they devote time and resources to building up their presence in regions many hundreds or thousands of miles away from the frontier?  This talk explores the vast network of estates that the Templars constructed during the Twelfth and Thirteenth centuries across almost every country in Western Christendom.  It discusses how their involvement in banking\, shipping\, agriculture and local politics all played their part in supporting the Templars’ ongoing efforts either to defend or to conquer the Holy Land. \nTickets are £8 member / £10 non-member and can be bought from our online shop. Why don’t you become a member and save money! \n A combination ticket for all talks in the series is available.

SUMMARY:Jane Seymour and Anna of Cleves\, the Wives with Afterlives
DESCRIPTION:The Six Wives of Henry VIII: Personality and Politics \nJoin us\, online\, as we welcome back Carol Ann Lloyd with another new series of talks. \nJane Seymour and Anna of Cleves\, the Wives with Afterlives \nAfter nearly three decades on the throne\, Henry VIII was desperate for a son and heir—and Jane Seymour delivered. Her role as the mother of his only son is how Henry memorialized Jane\, inserting her into a family picture nearly a decade after her death. But what more do we know about Jane? Although she’s often described as meek and mild\, the anti-Anne Boleyn\, Jane was deliberate in her pursuit of the king and the crown. She’s more complicated than we often think. \nAfter Jane’s death\, Henry sought a new wife quickly\, but it took him more than two years to find someone who would agree to marry him. Eventually Anna of Cleves\, sister of the Duke of Cleves and the only woman Henry didn’t pick for himself\, became wife number four. She has earned the nickname “Flander’s Mare” (something Henry himself did NOT call her) and it’s often thought her looks turned the king against her. But when she arrived in England she didn’t know how to play the court games the king loved. Even so\, Anna learned the rules quickly and\, when Henry asked her for an annulment\, managed to receive a generous settlement and live out his reign as the King’s Sister and survive into the reign of Mary I. \nTickets: Members £8 / Non-members £10 \nTickets can be bought from our shop and if this isn’t the first time you’ve paid more why don’t you become a member and start saving?

SUMMARY:The Templars and the wars of the Crusader States
DESCRIPTION:The Templar Talks  \nJoin us\, online\, as we welcome back Dr Nic Morton with his new series of talks. \nTalk 2: The Templars and the wars of the Crusader States \nDuring the years 1097-1099\, the armies of the First Crusade established three – later four – territories in the Near East\, known collectively to historians as the “Crusader States”.  From their very beginnings all these states were deeply embattled and throughout the Twelfth Century their rulers fought many wars against – or in alliance with – neighbouring powers across the region.  In this environment there was a mounting need for troops\, fortifications\, logistical support and money.  This talk explores how the Knights Templar and their sister order\, the Knights Hospitaller\, played a major role in the wars of this era\, garrisoning castles\, providing companies of warriors\, conducting diplomacy and gathering funds.  We shall examine the great castles they created and the way they were viewed by their admirers and adversaries.  We shall also discuss the problems they posed for the Crusader States’ rulers as their growing power increasingly made them difficult to control. \nTickets are £8 member / £10 non-member and can be bought from our online shop. Why don’t you become a member and save money! \nA combination ticket for all talks in the series is available.

SUMMARY:Anne Boleyn\, the Woman who Changed Everything
DESCRIPTION:The Six Wives of Henry VIII: Personality and Politics \nJoin us\, online\, as we welcome back Carol Ann Lloyd with another new series of talks. \nAnne Boleyn\, the Woman who Changed Everything \nShe’s the most studied\, argued about\, and parodied of Henry VIII’s wives. She’s depicted as a homewrecker and a witch with six fingers on one hand\, and on the other as the instigator of the English Reformation. Rarely is she thought of as a real woman\, Anne Boleyn was at the center of the biggest court scandal of Henry VIII’s reign. After courting her for seven years and being married to her for another three\, after a series of desperate love letters and promises of lasting devotion\, Henry turned against Anne\, and she became the first Queen of England to be executed at the Tower of London. \nTickets: Members £8 / Non-members £10 \nTickets can be bought from our shop and if this isn’t the first time you’ve paid more why don’t you become a member and start saving?

SUMMARY:The First Crusade and the origins of the Templars
DESCRIPTION:The Templar Talks  \nJoin us\, online\, as we welcome back Dr Nic Morton with his new series of talks. \nTalk 1: The First Crusade and the origins of the Templars \nThe Knights Templar have fascinating historians for centuries.  Their origins lie in the 1110s when a small band of knights committed themselves to defend the pilgrim roads to Jerusalem.  Yet within a few decades they rose to become a vast international organisation capable of raising armies of soldiers and drawing upon revenues comparable to those of Christendom’s leading monarchs.  So how did this come about?  Why did the Templars become so powerful so quickly?  In a similar vein\, why were Medieval Christians so ready to accept the idea of a religious order which enshrined the pursuit holy war as its core vocation.  In this talk\, we shall explore these questions so as to better understand both the Templar Order itself and the ideas underpinning its rise to power. \nTickets: Members £8 / Non-members £10 \nTickets can be bought from our shop and if this isn’t the first time you’ve paid more why don’t you become a member and start saving?\n A combination ticket for all talks in the series is available.
