SUMMARY:Autumn Talk - The Welfare Parish
DESCRIPTION:Ever wondered how welfare\, roads\, and local law was governed before the advent of the NHS\, the police and local government? Join us to learn about The Welfare Parish. \nBy the beginning of the 19th Century\, the parish had reached its administrative peak. Over centuries\, Acts of Parliament had given parish vestries authority over their highways through the Surveyor of the Highways\, law and order through the Parish Constable\, and the poor through Overseers of the Poor\, all funded from parish rates. By the end of the 18th Century\, all of these costs were rising\, particularly the cost of caring for the poor. \nDrawing on records from Lincolnshire parishes\, the talk will examine how parish Vestries sought to manage this expenditure until the passage of the 1834 Poor Law Reform Act\, which significantly transferred the responsibility for the poor from the parish to Union Workhouses. \nWith Dr Stewart Bennett

SUMMARY:Autumn Talk - The Cistercian Nunnery of Stixwould\, its Archaeology and History
DESCRIPTION: Stixwould Village Hall\, Stixwould\, LN10 5HP\n\n\n\n\n Saturday 1st November 2025\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFounded by Lucy countess of Chester\, possibly as early as 1135\, Stixwould Priory is part of the remarkable concentration of monastic houses that cluster along the Witham Valley. The priory has an intriguing history with the Bishop’s inspection reports noting that the nuns were sub-letting their accommodation and\, ‘some of the boarders said to be of suspicious character . . . especially one Janet Barton’. \nDave Start will present the story of what little we know of Stixwould Priory from its foundation c.1135 to its unusual three-stage suppression between 1536 and 1539.

SUMMARY:Visit the Sir Moses Montefiore Memorial Synagogue in Grimsby.
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Heritage Open Days Festival 2025\nBuilt in 1885\, the Sir Moses Monetfiore Memorial Synagogue is the only remaining Synagogue in Lincolnshire and South Humberside and one of few of this period in the country to survive so intact. Together with its accompanying bath house this synagogue reflects the former significance of Grimsby’s Jewish community and the town’s prominence in the movement of Jews from Eastern Europe to Britain and America. In the late 19th century Grimsby was the third largest centre (after London and Hull) for Jewish immigration\, with over 100\,000 landing here in the peak years between 1881 and 1914. \nJoin us to learn more about the rich history of this Victorian Synagogue\, the stories of Jewish people in Grimsby and how their ancestors arrived here from the docks and the current conservation project at the site. \nAddress: Sir Moses Montefiore Synagogue\, Heneage Road\, Grimsby DN32 9DZ. \nDate: Monday 15th September \nTime: Pop in between 10am – 2pm \nBooking required?: No \nFor more events\, take a look at the National Heritage Open Days website: https://www.heritageopendays.org.uk/whats-on.html

No two shows are the same! \nNottingham Trent University and Heritage Lincolnshire are proud to present a new FREE PERFORMANCE led by Time Will Tell Theatre\, which will bring the rich folklore of Bourne to life with new retellings\, accompanied by Lincolnshire folk songs performed by the up and coming\, fantastical Mossy Christian. \nDue to the sensitive nature of some of the topics in the folk stories being told\, there is an age restriction of 12+ for the evening performances. \nDoors open at 7:00 with the performance starting at 7:30\, there will be a 20 minute interval with refreshments available.
