DESCRIPTION:Part of the Lincolnshire HODs Festival 2024\nCharles Dickens in Foston? Explore Foston’s Heritage Trail to learn about the famous and the locals who have shaped Foston from medieval times onwards. A key location on a busy route – it’s surprising who has visited! \nNumbers will be restricted on the Tower Tours so you may need to wait to climb. We hope they will run both Saturdays\, but it is weather dependent.\nSt Peter’s Church is a Grade 1 listed building\, and whilst we make access as easy as possible\, there are uneven floors. The climb up the tower is not suitable for children under the age of 7 years due to the uneven steps. \nBooklet number: 17a \nRegion: SKDC \nAddress: St Peter’s Church\, Foston\, NG32 2LD \nTime: Sat 7th & Sat 14th 10.00 – 16.00 \nBooking required: No \nFor more events\, take a look at our Lincolnshire Heritage Open Days brochure. SUMMARY:HOD 2024 - St. Nicolas and Captain Bligh of the Bounty.
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Lincolnshire HODs Festival 2024\nThe Grade 1 listed mediaeval church of St. Nicolas has acted for centuries as a fixed point for travellers\, en route by land or sea around the Humber\, and a waypoint benchmark can still be seen on the West Tower. There is also a surprising connection to a very famous ship’s Captain\, Bligh of the Bounty. Captain Bligh carried out a navigational survey of the Humber in 1797\, using St. Nicolas’ church as one of many reference points\, on both banks of the river\, that helped to guide mariners along the meandering route of this major estuary. \nIf we open the tower access will be limited to the ringing room and bell chamber\, we will not be going on to the tower roof. Access is via a stone spiral staircase so participants should be in good physical health. \nBooklet number: 22a \nRegion: NEL \nAddress: St. Nicolas’ Church\, Great Coates Road\, Great Coates\, Grimsby\, DN37 9NS \nTime: Sat 7th 10.00-16.00 \nBooking required: No \nFor more events\, take a look at our Lincolnshire Heritage Open Days brochure. SUMMARY:HODs 2024 - Journey down to the Church Crypt
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Lincolnshire HODs Festival 2024\nThe church crypt is not normally open to the public but we are opening it for this weekend for Heritage Open Days. Please note that access is restricted down steps to the crypt. \nThe United Reformed Church in Spalding opened in 1823 as a Congregational Chapel. Around the church are several memorial tablets dating from this period\, with many buried in the crypt underneath the church. Two of the burials are of orphans Hannah and Robert Foe\, supposedly descendants of Daniel DeFoe\, but work is ongoing to try and find evidence of this. Entry to the crypt is down a set of fairly steep steps\, so may not be accessible to some. The church is Grade II listed\, in a traditional chapel lay-out\, with central pulpit\, pews and upstairs gallery. Items to note are the three stained glass windows depict Faith\, Hope and Charity\, installed 1908 – 1912. Memorial tablets around the church make interesting reading\, including some to past Ministers and people lost in war. Who remembers collecting half pennies to donate to the London Missionary Society? We have a model of the ship ‘The John Williams’ and will have this on display\, along with other church memorabilia. Light refreshments will also be available. \nBooklet number: n/a \nRegion: SHDC \nAddress: United Reformed Church\, Pinchbeck Road\, Spalding\, PE11 1QF \nTime: Sat 7th 10.00 – 16.00 & Sun 8th 12.00 – 15.00 \nBooking required: No \nFor more events\, take a look at our Lincolnshire Heritage Open Days brochure.
