Willow growing and basket making in Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire by Rodney Cousins
Description
The study covers the 2 historic counties of Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire. From the Census returns 1841-1901, it is clear that each county benefited from the other, sharing skills and expertise.
This study over thirty years, began with a project – ‘to record a local traditional country craftsman’. The craftsman chosen was the late Harry Summers, basket maker of Sutton on Trent. Like many crafts the product looks simply made, but the eye and mind are deceived.
The craft required a long apprenticeship and many years experience, to turn the raw willow rod, into a functional container often combining strength with beauty.
Within this book you will find an appreciation within its pages of the craft that brought an international reputation to the area, a great deal of employment, a vast array of products, but little wealth to the workers.
