Spalding Reconnected: Historic Town and Riverside

Project Cost: Just under £250,000

An exciting project filled with arts, environmental education, riverside improvement, heritage and wayfinding initiatives to reconnect the picturesque river Welland with the historic town centre of Spalding.

Spalding Reconnected aims to enhance the experience of the market town for local people and visitors alike. It will bring the rich history and heritage of Spalding to life utilising high-quality research and storytelling to provide information and insights about buildings and places throughout the town. Helping to reconnect the town for the better.

The project is being developed and delivered by a number of partners:

Transported, bringing creativity to the community through co-created artwork installations.

East Mercia Rivers Trust, who will introduce river-based environmental initiatives to schools through The Eels in the Classroom programme and determine riverside improvements such as re-planting and floating eco-systems.

Landmark, developing new wayfinding approaches to connect the town and riverside effectively, through way markers, signage and trails.

Heritage Lincolnshire, as project management and leading the co-creation of the Spalding Heritage Strategy – a live document and action plan identifying themes, priorities and projects for the future of heritage in Spalding.

South Holland District Council and Lincolnshire County Council, providing crucial expertise and support throughout development and delivery of these initiatives.

The project emerged from the Spalding Town Centre Improvement Programme and has been developed in partnership between South Holland District Council, Heritage Lincolnshire, Transported Arts, East Mercia Rivers Trust and Lincolnshire County Council. This project is made possible thanks to funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, made possible thanks to National Lottery players.

Elver Release Day, with East Mercia Rivers Trust as part of The Eels in the Classroom Programme. Over the course of four weeks, local schoolchildren in Spalding nurtured the young elvers to then reintroduce the endangered eels back into the river Welland. You can read more about it here.
